Mason Gross School of the Arts is the flagship public arts conservatory of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, a Big Ten research university serving more than 65,000 students, the nation’s eighth-oldest institution of higher learning, and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities. Mason Gross is a community of artists—dancers, filmmakers, musicians, theater artists, and visual artists and designers—who study, teach, create, perform, and exhibit. The mission of the school is to nurture creative talent and instill the insights and skills that future generations of arts professionals need to contribute to the creative and scholarly world. The school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in dance, filmmaking, music, theater, and art & design. Musicology | The program is designed to enable qualified students to proceed straight through to the doctoral degree. Students who already have a master’s degree are encouraged to apply. Current faculty in musicology and music theory have areas of expertise that cover the standard repertory period, early music, contemporary music, ethnomusicology and music technology. Student may also participate in performance organizations (admission by audition). |

Composition,Musicology Music Theory | Student composers regularly present their music in orchestra and band readings, opera scene workshops, composition department recitals, and multimedia concerts. Student composers also “learn by doing” through individual collaborations with performers, and through mentored, interdisciplinary projects with students in other degree programs and departments at the Mason Gross School of the Arts. |
