The Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK) is a city-based art university which creates cultural values for the future through its tireless research in the fields of music, dance and drama. |
Today’s MUK dates back to the efforts begun during the 1920s by private stakeholders and the public administration of the City of Vienna to provide access to the highest standards of education in the arts and music to a wide range of people on an artistic as well as an educational level. Since the university’s accreditation in 2005 (still known back then as the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität), the City of Vienna – as thesole owner of the GmbH institution – has made it possible for 850 students from all over the world to access artistic education that is contemporary, highly demanding on an international level, yet financially viable and in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Declaration of the European Union. |
Keyboard Instruments, Conducting and Composition | The study programme Keyboard Instruments, Conducting and Composition offers a comprehensive education in piano, accordion and organ as well as in orchestra conducting and composition. |
String Instruments | The range of string instrument courses targets the “Best of the Best” and focuses on the job descriptions of soloist, ensemble musician, orchestra musician and instrumental teaching (IGP) in the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The Academic diploma programme Chamber Music focuses on the training of chamber musicians. |
Wind and Percussion Instruments | The range of wind and percussion instrument courses targets the “Best of the Best”and focuses on the job descriptions of soloist, ensemble musician, orchestra musician and instrumental teaching (IGP) in the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. |
Jazz | The study programme Jazz at the MUK is aimed at „the best of the best“ and is structured according to a unique concept. In the first four semesters, students receive a thorough education in Straight Ahead Jazz, for whose quality the study programme Jazz has been internationally renowned for many years. |
Early Music | The Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna has offered degrees in Early Music since 1994, with the practice-oriented training focussing on the realisation of music literature from the Ars Nova to the start of the Romantic era on suitable historical instruments, while considering and researching historical sources |

Drama | The study programme Drama at the MUK provides a dual education for stage and film at an internationally recognized level. The full-time acting course offered is completed after four years with a Bachelor of Arts degree. |
Dance | The Dance programmes at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna include the two independent vocational training programmes for stage dance (BA Contemporary and Classical Dance) and dance pedagogy (BA Contemporary Dance Teaching) as well as a preliminary course for 10-15 year olds (Dance preparatory course). |

Classical Operetta (Academic diploma programme) | The academic diploma programme Classic Operetta addresses the cultivation and further development of the art form operetta as a “complete Austrian and Central European art” in theory and practice, based on the research of primary sources and an understanding of contemporary musical theatre |
