B.A. in Music | The Bachelor of Arts in Music at Montana State University is designed to enable students to combine concentrated music studies with a wide variety of areas outside of music. In this program, students pursue core music studies in performance, theory, and history, along with a broad range of specialized music and outside subjects at a Carnegie Foundation “very high research activity” designated university.Dynamic faculty work one-on-one in the studio, performers participate in a wide range of ensembles, and specialists lead academic courses. Students develop a program of study in consultation with their academic advisor. These programs may include specialized music and non-music electives, institutional certificates, or minors (examples below). Skills and knowledge acquired while studying in the Bachelor of Arts in Music program allow students the flexibility to follow many career paths both in music and a variety of other fields… MUSIC & MORE at MSU. |
Music Education | The Bachelor of Music Education (K-12 Broadfield) leads to certification to teach music at all levels of the public schools. A selection of courses in music education, music theory, and music history are offered at the graduate level.100% of recent MSU music education graduates who sought jobs in music education are currently working in the field. MSU-Bozeman has an excellent relationship with the Bozeman public schools. We offer students four separate semester-long practicum experiences prior to student teaching. Additional coursework in music education includes conducting, music technology for educators, orchestration, general music methods, instrumental methods, and choral methods. |

Masters Program | The graduate faculty are committed to offering multiple avenues for students to fulfill their goals and expectations for advanced study in teaching, learning, and curriculum design. The program provides academic preparation for educators who seek higher education in order to become master teachers, scholars, researchers, or curriculum coordinators in schools, districts, and other educational agencies. The program is structured to allow full-time working professionals to continue their jobs while working toward an advanced degree. |
EdD Program | The Doctor of Education (EdD) degree in Curriculum and Instruction has been designed to prepare students to teach in teacher education programs across the country in college and university settings. Progress through the degree provides students with opportunities to develop their professional knowledge and skills in the areas of research, teaching, and service.The graduate faculty is committed to offering multiple avenues for students to reach their goals and expectations for advanced study in teaching, learning, and teacher education. The program takes an integrated approach to pre-service teacher education. The study of the theoretical underpinnings of teacher education are carefully examined in the context of practical experiences in teacher education research, college teaching, and professional service. |
PhD Program | The PhD in Education is designed for graduate students seeking faculty or research positions in higher education or positions within research organizations that require educational research in highly specialized disciplines. Progress through the degree provides students with opportunities to develop specialized disciplinary content and research knowledge along with scholarly experiences that will provide the foundational knowledge and skills required for success as faculty in higher education and in research organizations. |
