The East Carolina University School of Music is one of the premier recognized and comprehensive music schools in the Southeast. Its predominantly online MM in Music Education degree recently was commended by the National Association of Schools of Music. At ECU you are a part of a student body of approximately 250 undergraduate and 70 graduate students. This select group works and plays (and almost lives) in the A. J. Fletcher Music Center, a facility dedicated entirely to music. The School of Music offers some of the finest performances in the state. Student and faculty performances are held in the A. J. Fletcher Recital Hall, the Brody School of Medicine Auditorium and the 1,500-seat Wright Auditorium. The School of Music is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) . Music History & Literature | The ECU School of Music’s program in Musicology encompasses required undergraduate courses in Music History & Literature and World Music, and upper-division/graduate electives exploring the history of specific musical eras, as well as topics in ethnomusicology. Music Education | The MM in Music Education is predominantly online (emphasis in Pedagogical Studies is 100% online), and offers you two options: one is in teacher education (approved for North Carolina teacher licensure), the other option does not include licensure preparation.* |
Choral Conducting | The MM programs in choral conducting at ECU are geared towards students who are curious, eager to learn, hardworking, and passionate about developing their craft. Primary emphasis is placed on growth in four key areas: score study, musicianship, manual gesture, and rehearsal preparation and pedagogy. |

Suzuki Pedagogy | Graduates of the Suzuki Pedagogy Program are highly sought after for prestigious jobs throughout the United States and abroad. While most of the students are Masters degree candidates, undergraduates are able to take the courses at the junior level, with the professor’s approval. A certificate in Suzuki Pedagogy is available for those who meet the standards of the National Association of Schools of Music and requires a BM in music or equivalent. |
Certificate of Advanced Performance Studies (CAPS) | The Certificate of Advanced Performance Studies (CAPS) is a highly focused one-year program that provides concentrated training and performance experiences for post-baccalaureate students who demonstrate superior performance ability. It may serve as a preparatory program in performance for graduate study, a performing career, or as a concentrated post-graduate program for those not desiring an additional degree.
