For over 40 years the Department of Music has provided hundreds of graduates with a practical, creative and intellectual foundation for careers in music and music related fields. Our B.A. (Hons) in Music degree programme is one of the largest full-time programmes in Hong Kong and is designed to enable our graduates to work intelligently and creatively towards their own aspirations. Recent graduates have developed careers in teaching music at universities, secondary and primary schools as well as careers in arts management, recording, creative media, radio and television production and other music-related fields. Many of our graduates have furthered their studies in graduate schools worldwide including the US and Europe. The Department has 20 full-time, 15 part-time, and over 100 adjunct faculty, many of them are leading artists and academics. The music composed and performed by faculty artists is distributed globally through CDs, DVDs, live performances, and broadcast, whereas papers and books written by our scholars are published in international journals and by major presses. Although actively engaged in scholarly and creative activities, our teachers are committed to helping students reach a high level of musical and intellectual development.


Associate DegreeThis area of Concentration Studies aims to nurture young artists to acquire general musical knowledge and practical skills needed for a variety of careers in music while providing students with the opportunities for personal and intellectual development.
Bachelor of ArtsPlease note that the BA(Hons.) in Music is NOT a part of broad-based admissions to the Faculty of Arts. Students who wish to study the BA(Hons.) in Music will continue to apply directly via JUPAS or non-JUPAS channels for admission to the degree program in Year 1. It is not possible for students admitted through broad-based admissions to choose the BA (Hons.) in Music at the end of Year 1.
Bachelor of Music in Creative IndustriesThis programme provides comprehensive training to aspiring composers, vocalists, and instrumentalists for careers in creative and entertainment industries. Students are given plenty of opportunities to hone their skills in music technology, composition, performance, production, and entrepreneurship. The programme offers a new career pathway for students with the following two concentrations:  1. Scoring for Film, Television and Video Games  2. Popular Music Performance and Songwriting
BA in Music Studies

This programme is offered by Department of Music, Hong Kong Baptist University for holders of Associate Degree (AD) or Higher Diploma (HD) in the related disciplines who wish to continue on to a Bachelor’s degree in music studies. We place a strong emphasis on solo, chamber and ensemble performance throughout the years of study, providing a rich experience in practical music making.

Postgraduate DegreeTargeting music educators and other holders of a degree in music, the Master of Arts in Music at HKBU offers chances to meet and learn with experienced music scholars from Hong Kong and all over the world. The courses cover different study areas and students choose courses according to their professional interests and musical aspirations.

Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, established by Government Ordinance in 1984, is a leading tertiary institution for the performing arts in Asia. It provides professional undergraduate education and practice-based postgraduate studies. The study encompasses Chinese Opera, Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music, and Theatre and Entertainment Arts. Its educational philosophy reflects the cultural diversity of Hong Kong with emphasis on Chinese and Western traditions, and interdisciplinary learning. The Academy awards master’s degree, bachelor honours degree, advanced diploma, diploma and certificate programmes that are accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.
Besides the main campus in Wanchai, Béthanie, the site of the Academy’s Landmark Heritage Campus in Pokfulam, has housed training facilities for the School of Film and Television since 2006.
